Frequently asked Questions
Are SMAs included in my subscription?
- Both the Morningstar and eVestment SMAs are available as an add-on to your current tier. For more information, you can reach out to your account manager here.
How do I measure the size of an SMA if assets under management or net asset value are blank?
-
SMAs are tracked and invested into differently than a traditional pooled fund. This investment vehicle is not necessarily tracked by NAV, and it is not “managed” by one asset manager. For these reasons, metrics like NAV and AUM are only available for CEFs, ETFs, and Mutual Funds. You can use the metric Total Market Value to compare the size of an SMA.
Do SMAs have fund flows?
-
No - SMAs do not track fund flows as they are not subject to flows of other investors’ money going in and out.
How is performance calculated for SMAs?
-
We have three types of performance metrics that can be used when calculating SMA performance.
-
Gross Returns: no assumed fees
-
Total Returns: fee determined by fund manager (Note: it is not required that fund managers submit a fee, so total and gross returns could match for some SMAs.)
-
Net Returns: 3% fee applied
-
Can I set a custom fee for SMAs?
- To control the fee applied to SMAs, first create a portfolio that allocates 100% to the SMA, as SMA performance in our portfolios is based on Gross Returns. You can then customize the overall cost by adding an advisory fee at the portfolio level. Learn more about creating portfolios here.
